In many Polynesian traditions Tiki was the first man. Tiki is also the name given to wooden carvings throughout Polynesia that depict the human form. During World War II and throughout the 1950s Tiki enjoyed a near frenzy of popularity as a design element, reaching it's height when Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1959. Today, a resurgence of Tiki's popularity can be seen among fashionistas on both U.S. coasts.
